Flooding is expected on the Big Island through Friday

The National Weather Service today warned of minor coastal flooding expected during the highest high tides on Hawaii Island this week.

The alert is in effect through Friday afternoon and applies to Kona, Kohala, Big Island South, Big Island Southeast, Big Island East and Big Island North.

“Peak tides associated with the new moon, combined with higher than forecast water levels, will result in minor coastal flooding and low-lying coastal areas,” NWS said in the statement. “Coastal flooding is possible around the daily peak tide, which will occur in the afternoon hours.”

Consequences include flooding of normally dry beaches, minor coastal erosion and saltwater flooding.

The public should avoid driving on flooded roads, move electronics, vehicles or other valuables to higher ground, monitor watercraft to ensure mooring lines are not overly taut, and secure canoes or other watercraft that are beached.
