While the Philadelphia Flyers are still in the midst of rebuilding, there is certainly excitement heading into the 2024-2025 season. The biggest reason for this is that top prospect Matvei Michkov is about to play his first NHL season with the club.

Michkov is expected to be a big part of the Flyers’ rebuild as the 2023 seventh overall pick has all the potential in the world to become a future star in the NHL. This makes him a very valuable part of their squad.
Due to Michkov’s importance, the Flyers are going to protect the youngster at all costs. Flyers captain Sean Couturier made this abundantly clear in tonight’s (September 28) preseason against the Boston Bruins.
After Bruins defenseman Billy Swezey got into a scrum with Michkov, Couturier immediately defended the Flyers’ top prospect and dropped the gloves. Couturier isn’t necessarily known for his fighting skills, but he handled the Bruins’ 6-foot-4 defenseman well.
This is exactly the kind of thing the Flyers want to see from their captain. He sent a clear message that the Flyers will not allow Michkov to be pushed around without consequences.
