Ford is testing shipping cars from the Mexican port of Guaymas to reduce logistics costs

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Ford shipped its first batch of cars on Tuesday from the once-ignored Guaymas port near its factory in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, in a project that if fully launched could cut logistics costs by 30%. %.

The first shipment of pickups and Broncos bound for Chile is part of a broader revamp of the Port of Guaymas, an infrastructure project led by outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Ford has long been sending its cars nearly 1,200 miles overland from Hermosillo to the port of Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan state, Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo said in an interview.

Durazo described the long term as a “logistical tragedy” that could easily be solved by moving shipping to the port of Guaymas.
