Alex Regula, a prospect who was part of the Chicago Blackhawks organization two seasons ago, was placed on waivers by the Boston Bruins and picked up by the Edmonton Oilers.
Chicago traded Regula to the Bruins as part of the deal to acquire Taylor Hall in the 2023 offseason. The Bruins signed Regula for the second time this past offseason to a one-year, league-minimum contract worth $775,000.
He was injured before the season started and has been on injured reserve for the entire season. When he got healthy, he was cleared for waivers for the second straight season. The Bruins also cut him from their 2023 roster in training camp.
Edmonton claims Alec Regula granted waivers

Regula played all 22 games of his NHL career in Chicago and didn’t play a single one for Boston last season. He played the entire 2023-24 season in the AHL, where the defenseman scored four goals and 26 points in 55 games. He scored five goals and 21 points in 51 games in 2022-23 for the Rockford IceHogs.
The former Blackhawks prospect has one career goal that came in the 2021-2022 season. Regula’s time in Chicago had clearly come to an end, as there was simply no room for him to grow in the organization with those on the move. The Blackhawks have arguably the best and/or most young defensemen/defensive prospects in the league right now.

Regula is not a bad defenseman and he could prove some people wrong at the NHL level. There is an advantage that was achieved in Junior. He’s a solid depth player who has at least some NHL experience, which is what the Oilers are hoping for with his pickup. It’s entirely possible he ends up back in Boston soon, but he won’t be returning to the Blackhawks.
