Former North Dakota Senator Ray Holmberg has signed an agreement saying he will plead guilty to a child sex tourism charge.

A plea agreement filed in U.S. District Court says Holmberg will voluntarily plead guilty to one count of traveling with the intent to engage in illegal sexual activity.

In the agreement, the longtime legislative leader acknowledges that he traveled from Grand Forks to Prague between June 24, 2011 and November 1, 2016 for the purpose of having commercial sex with adolescents under the age of 18, the document said.

Under the agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop other charges and seek a sentence at the low end of sentencing guidelines. The maximum penalty for this charge is 30 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and lifetime supervised release.

Holmberg, 79, also acknowledges in the agreement that he would have to register as a sex offender.
