Now that we’re essentially halfway through September, we’re starting to see free agents sign professional tryout (PTO) deals in the NHL. While this is the case, there are still several notable names who haven’t signed a PTO or contract for the 2024-25 campaign.

Defenseman Marco Scandella is one of several former Sabres unsigned at this point in the offseason, but the possibility of that changing is certainly there.
Scandella, 34, is a veteran defender who can still handle bottom-two minutes and work on the penalty kill, so teams in need of some help on the left side of their defense might at least consider giving him a shot with a PTO.
Scandella spent last season with the St. Louis Blues, where he had two goals, eight points, 70 hits and a plus-2 rating in 65 games. While it wasn’t a dominant season for the Montreal, Quebec native, he still proved useful, so the prospect of a club signing him on a cheap one-year deal for the season is there.
Scandella played three seasons with the Sabres, where he had 14 goals, 44 points and 182 hits in 176 games. His time with the Sabres ended in the 2019-20 season when he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for a fourth-round pick.
