Former track coach accused of indecent liberties with a student

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said detectives arrested and charged 39-year-old Matthew Elliott, a former high school track coach, with two counts of indecent liberties with a student.

On Friday, an adult victim reported to police that she had had an inappropriate relationship with her former cross country coach while enrolled at a local private high school. CMPD did not reveal which school in its news release.

The victim said the coach was Elliot, CMPD said.

The CMPD Sexual Assault Unit took over the case.

The victim said Elliot began flirting with her, making numerous advances and they had an inappropriate relationship.

There was sufficient probable cause to issue arrest warrants.

On Wednesday, detectives arrested Elliot at his home without incident and he was charged with the offenses, CMPD said.

In the letter to parents and alumni, the interim head of the school says:

“We understand this news is difficult, and we are here to support students, families, alumni, faculty and staff. We know how much you care about the safety of your children, and their well-being remains our top priority. Our school counselors are available to speak with students and provide guidance during this time.”
