Forums to focus on the upcoming transition to sixth grade

ELKHART – A series of three informational forums are planned for families to learn more about sixth-graders’ transition to middle schools starting next school year, Elkhart Community Schools officials said.

These sessions are an opportunity for families to learn more about how this transition will support students’ academic and social development, and how the district is preparing for a smooth and successful implementation.

Translation services will be available. Only questions submitted in advance through an online form on the district’s website will be addressed during the forums.

All ECS families can attend one of the following sessions:

Tuesday, October 15: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the Pierre Moran Middle School gymnasium, 200 W. Lusher Ave., Elkhart

Wednesday, October 16: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Elkhart High School Cafeteria, 2608 California Road, Elkhart

Saturday, Oct. 19: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Beardsley Elementary gymnasium, 1027 McPherson St., Elkhart

Recordings of each session will be available online and a list of frequently asked questions will be created based on questions asked during the sessions, the district said.

Plans for the transition of sixth-graders to middle schools emerged from a broader feasibility study that called for a “reimagining of our schools” in the coming years, district Superintendent Larry Huff said during a school board workshop in September.
