There are more than 500 cities worldwide with a population of more than 1 million people. And every year for the past decade, Resonance Consultancy, a real estate and tourism consultancy, has released a report ranking the top 100.
The 2025 World’s Best Cities report included four California cities on the list, calculated based on three broad categories: livability, livability and prosperity.
Livability includes considerations such as the density of bike lanes and how apartment prices compare to average household income. Discoverability is based on the number of attractions, such as nightlife, shopping and restaurants, above a certain Tripadvisor rating. Prosperity takes into account statistics such as the city’s education level and the percentage of people participating in the labor force.
