Four police officers killed in Mexico’s most violent state

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Gunmen in northern Mexico attacked a police patrol and killed four officers in a shooting that also wounded four people, authorities said Tuesday.

The attack took place on Monday in the north-central state of Guanajuato, which has the highest homicide rate in Mexico. It has long been the scene of bloody battles between rival cartels, and the state has long been one of the deadliest for police in Mexico.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that the attack took place in the city of Uriangato, near the border with neighboring Michoacan state. Those killed in the attack included a female officer.

The industrial and agricultural state of Guanajuato has been the scene of a bloody battle for years between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and a local gang, the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.
