Francis Ford Coppola to Release Unconventional Epic ‘Megalopolis,’ ‘SNL’ Returns for Presidential Election, Joshua Jackson Sets Course in ‘Doctor Odyssey’

Hello friends! I’m Kelsey, your guide to all things pop culture for Yahoo Entertainment, and this is the The Listour weekly roundup of what’s new and noteworthy. In it, I recommended a range of upcoming releases to watch, stream, listen to, read, and binge. I’ll take you through my favorites.

Joshua Jackson stars in new TV series Doctor Odyssey. (Tina Thorpe/Disney)

📺 Doctor Odyssey makes waves

  • When: Doctor Odyssey premieres September 26 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC, airing Thursdays. It will stream the following day on Hulu.

  • What you need to know: Joshua Jackson from Dawsons Creek stars in the new series as a doctor who cares for the rich and beautiful passengers on a luxury cruise ship. Guest stars in the first season include John Stamos and Kelsea Ballerini. [People]

  • Why I’m going to watch: I compulsively watch everything from creator Ryan Murphy, from Joy Unpleasant 9-1-1, because I know he’s going to take a typical procedural and make it wonderfully over-the-top. It looks like a lot of other people will be watching too, because the trailer has racked up a record number of views. [Deadline]

📺 Great British Baking Show soothes our souls

  • When: Great British Baking Show Collection 12 premieres on Netflix on September 27th. New episodes drop on Fridays.

  • What you need to know: Another group of 12 non-professional bakers compete in weekly timed challenges for a chance at the grand prize: a bouquet of flowers and a cake stand. The contestants are friendly and cooperative, and the show has a glowingly charming atmosphere. [Yahoo Entertainment]

  • Why I’m going to watch: I love cooking competitions, but it’s also fun to watch Gordon Ramsey yell at a bunch of chefs fighting for their livelihood. The kitchen of hell is not good for my blood pressure at this age. GBBS is the opposite — a soothing balm in TV form. Watch the trailer and you’ll see what I mean. [People]

🎥 Megalopolis brings the dreams of a legendary director to life

  • When: Megalopolis is in theaters from September 27.

  • What you need to know: The film follows a brilliant architect (Adam Driver) on his quest to transform the city of New Rome into a utopia, but the actual plot is secondary to the lore surrounding it. Director Francis Ford Coppola spent decades and $120 million of his own money making the film outside the studio system. The film has garnered controversy, including a misleading trailer and accusations on the set. [Today/The Wrap]

  • Why I recommend it: The off-screen chaos kept me interested in the film, but the film’s stunning visuals kept me glued to my seat — as did the live actor who appears in select U.S. theaters to interact with the film. At TIFF, Coppola told me that cinema is always changing — and those who don’t want it to change “are trying to sell it to you.” [Yahoo Entertainment]

📺 SNL celebrates a big birthday – and an election year

  • When: The first episode of Saturday Night Live Season 50 airs September 28 at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time on NBC and the following day on Peacock.

  • What you need to know: The show is entering its 50th season with three new cast members and big-name hosts like Ariana Grande and John Mulaney. There’s also a promising movie coming up about the show’s chaotic first episode that could bring in new viewers. [Yahoo Entertainment]

  • Why I’m going to watch: Like many people, I’m obsessed with trying to guess which celebrities will star in presidential election sketches. We’ve got Maya Rudolph on board to play Kamala Harris, and James Austin Johnson will be doing his Trump impression, but what about those potential VPs? [Yahoo Entertainment/ Deadline/The Wrap]

📚 Sally Rooney leaves her comfort zone with Intermezzo

  • When: Intermezzo by Sally Rooney is now available for purchase.

  • What you need to know: Author Sally Rooney is back with her fourth novel, which tells the story of two brothers struggling with heartbreak and ethical dilemmas. [People]

  • Why I’m going to read: I loved Rooney’s other books about quiet young women navigating relationships and capitalism, Conversations with friends And Normal peoplebut I was glad to hear that she stepped out of her “social reality” with this film. I don’t expect a TV adaptation though. [The Hollywood Reporter]
