Franklin Street is now open

Aug. 23 — GREENSBURG — A block-long stretch of Franklin Street that runs along the east side of the Decatur County Courthouse was reopened Wednesday morning after city workers removed several signs and barricades. The project began in May with a promised completion date of “before the fall festival.”

According to Decatur County Commissioner Mark Koors, only the handicapped facilities that have already been ordered remain to be installed.

This is the third of four projects planned to revitalize Courthouse Square.

In August 2013, construction began on brick paved paths and landscaped crosswalks to Broadway Street.

In 2018, the perennially muddy sidewalks on Main Street on the south side of the square were replaced with higher curbs, wrought iron benches and plantings.

Work on the Washington Street portion of the project is expected to begin in a few months.

Washington Street is being “reimagined,” starting at the Presbyterian Church and continuing to City Hall. New crosswalks and sidewalks, landscaping, and angled parking will be added.

The Daily News will follow the revitalization project as changes occur.
