A police officer was struck by gunfire in southeast Fresno on Saturday evening.

The shooting happened near Tulare and Eighth streets.

A woman told The Bee she heard gunshots from her home and saw officers standing near her neighbor’s home with their guns pointed at a possible suspect.

It was not immediately known what led to the shooting. Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto was expected to provide details soon.

The woman added that a vehicle crashed into a nearby school and there was a hole in her neighbor’s window.

Police have set up a crime scene around her neighbor’s house.

Police said the Fresno police officer is in stable condition.

The condition of the suspect is unknown.

Police say the area will be closed for an extended period of time.
