Frigid temperatures, possible snow chance for the week

No major snowstorms are expected in Louisville this week, but temperatures in the single digits and teens will cool the city down over the next few days.

The cold front will keep air temperatures below freezing through Wednesday, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Louisville. Snow is also expected soon on Tuesday, but data shows Indiana may get slightly more snow than Kentucky, meteorologist Mark Jarvis said Monday.

The wind chill will likely make it feel even colder on Tuesday, with the wind chill expected to be as low as 2 degrees during the day. Tuesday night the air temperature may be around 6 degrees. Jarvis said the single-digit wind chill will continue into Wednesday morning.

Some relief from the winter conditions could come Thursday, when Louisville is expected to emerge from the freeze. Highs will be around 90 degrees on Thursday and could rise into the 40s Friday and Saturday, according to the NWS forecast.

There are no significant snow problems in Louisville through Friday, but the city and much of the country are at “small risk” of heavy snow from Saturday through Monday, according to the Climate Prediction Center. Jarvis said the weather service’s models for precipitation vary widely and it is difficult to predict how much snow will fall in the region.

“Some models only show rain for Louisville Friday evening through Saturday, while others show rain and snow on the tail end of the system,” Jarvis said.
