Astronaut Williams Anders died Friday, June 7, 2024 at the age of 90. In this “CBS Sunday Morning” story, originally broadcast on December 23, 2018, Anders and his fellow Apollo 8 crew members James Lovell and Frank Borman spoke with Lee Cowan about being the first humans to orbit the moon, and about the photo they brought with them: the first image of the Earth above the moon’s surface. Called ‘Earthrise’, it showed humanity the beauty and fragility of our home planet, and helped galvanize the environmental movement.
