Garbage truck fire forces residents of nearby Sun Valley to evacuate

Police evacuated some Sun Valley residents Monday as firefighters tried to extinguish a fire in a garbage truck.

It started around noon near the 8440 block of N. Laurel Canyon Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, they found the natural gas-powered garbage truck engulfed in flames.

The fire threatened a nearby apartment building. As a precaution, Los Angeles police evacuated about 21 homes within a 300-foot safety perimeter.

Firefighters ordered all but two households to return to their homes as crews reduced the fire to a smoldering flames. They say no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
