German Bundestag extends army deployment in Bosnia

German armed forces will continue their deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of an international mission, lawmakers agreed on Thursday.

The Bundestag, as the German parliament is known, has extended the mandate of the EU mission Eufor Althea by a large majority.

Up to fifty German soldiers must ensure compliance with the Dayton peace agreement, which ended the war in Bosnia in 1995. However, the Balkan state is still considered a potential conflict center.

Later, the Bundestag will expand two more Bundeswehr missions abroad, in Kosovo and in Lebanon.

NATO’s KFOR mission in Kosovo still has about 400 German soldiers there to protect peace and public order in Kosovo, where tensions with Serbia have recently flared.

Lawmakers will also agree to retain 300 soldiers as part of the UN’s UNIFIL mission to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Lebanon.

Jens Spahn, member of the German Bundestag, speaks in the Bundestag. The 178th session of the 20th German Bundestag will include the planned hospital reform and votes on the deployment of the Bundeswehr in Kosovo (KFOR), Bosnia-Herzegovina (EUFOR Althea) and off the coast of Lebanon (UNIFIL).
