German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was due to visit the western German city of Solingen on Monday, three days after a knife attack there left three people dead.

The attack took place on Friday evening on a market square in the center of Solingen during the Festival of Diversity, which was organized in honor of the city’s 650th anniversary.

According to the local police chief, two men, aged 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman were killed and eight others were injured, four of them seriously.

According to the German news agency Bundespressdienst, Scholz’s visit will begin at 09:30 (07:30 GMT) and will include a memorial service for the victims at the site of the attack. There will also be talks with Solingen Mayor Tim Kurzbach and emergency services.

Scholz is accompanied by the Prime Minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst.

The suspect of the knife attack, a 26-year-old Syrian, has been remanded in custody on the orders of an investigating judge.

A judge has issued an arrest warrant for the man on suspicion of murder and membership of the terrorist group Islamic State, the Federal Public Prosecution Service reported on Sunday.
