Germany’s controversial far-left party, Die Linke (Left), has selected its main candidates for the expected early elections, it announced at a press conference on Sunday.
Once a date is set, the election campaign will be led by party co-leader Jan van Aken and parliamentary speaker Heidi Reichinnek.
“We are going into this election campaign united and as one party,” fellow co-leader Ines Schwerdtner said, noting that the party had made the decision jointly.
Germany needs a strong left, Van Aken wrote on the social media platform X. “There should be no billionaires. They didn’t earn their wealth; they took it from all of us. Now we are taking it back,” he said. wrote.
Die Linke has seen its support collapse following the departure last year of one of its leading figures, Sahra Wagenknecht, to form a new party in her own name. At this point, it is unclear whether Die Linke would reach the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament.
Party leaders Van Aken and Schwerdtner have only been in office for a few weeks.
