Get your fresh produce from a place you might not expect in Canandaigua. Here’s where

CANANDAIGUA — In addition to books and other resources, Wood Library is now a popular place for fresh produce, cut flowers and starter plants.

The Little Free Farm self-service booth opened July 1 at the library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua.

All items are donated by local gardeners and are free to the public. People are also encouraged to give what they can from their own garden, take what they need or trade what they can’t use.

Here’s why it pays to give this holiday season. The Little Free Farm Stand was built by TwinSpruce Customs with donations made last year to Wood Library at ROC the Day, an annual 24-hour event in November aimed at generating donations for nonprofits.

Alexis Lawrence, adult librarian at Wood Library, and Cyndi Fordham, administrative assistant, staff the Little Free Farm Stand, now open at the library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua.

Library Director Jenny Goodemote said the farm stand reflects the library’s core values and strategic goals of making information and services accessible to all and making a positive contribution to the community.

The hope is that the farm stand will help address food insecurity in the community, introduce everyone who wants it to healthier eating, reduce food waste in local gardens, and create more generosity and kindness.

The farm stand, which is maintained by library staff and volunteers, resembles one that was set up in Geneva a few years ago and is modeled after the Little Free Libraries found in many neighborhoods across the country.
