The New York Giants had a miserable season, but they’ll be back on top in 2025.

The Giants issued a statement Monday morning that coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will return despite finishing 3-14.

Giants owner John Mara said he wanted to be patient with Daboll and Schoen even as the losses piled up. It had to be tough when Mara watched Saquon Barkley, a popular player who left the Giants for the Eagles in the offseason, rush for 2,000 yards with an NFC East-winning Eagles team. But Mara still stuck it out with his coach and GM.

Daboll’s first season was successful. Far from being a dominant team, the Giants rode a string of close wins to the playoffs, where they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the wild card round. That led to Daboll receiving the Coach of the Year award. It also led to the Giants signing Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal.

Not much has gone right since then. Jones never developed into anything more than a below-average starter. The Giants started the 2023 season with a 40-0 home loss to the Dallas Cowboys and never recovered, going 6-11. The 2024 season was even worse. The Giants went on a 10-game losing streak and Jones was benched and eliminated in the process.

Schoen’s moves have been criticized, especially after the Giants were featured on a season of “Hard Knocks” that followed them this season. One excerpt that’s referenced endlessly is Mara saying he would have trouble sleeping if Barkley landed with the Eagles, which he did. Barkley couldn’t have helped become an MVP candidate. Other moves haven’t worked out well, though receiver Malik Nabers had a productive rookie season after being a first-round pick out of New York.

The Giants quickly wanted to get rid of the practice of cycling through coaches and general managers. Now they hope that Schoen and Daboll will bring about a turnaround.
