NEW YORK – New York City Gridlock Warning Days are back as the peak holiday tourism season begins, ahead of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are all Gridlock Alert Days, according to the New York City Department of Transportation. These are days when traffic is expected to be at its worst, and the public is strongly encouraged to use public transport where possible.
There are 20 Gridlock Alert Days, and these are included the UN General Assemblywho came and went back in September.
While the current series of Gridlock Alert Days is linked to this Thanksgivingthey will return again during the tourist and shopping season leading up to Christmas.
The city also established a car-free zone around Rockefeller Center earlier during the busy holiday season.
Congestion pricing back in the spotlight
As New York City traffic slowly slows during these Gridlock Alert Days, congestion pricing is once again in the spotlight. Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced the planwhich is designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city’s busy Central Business District, will start in January.
She has proposed a reduced fee of $9 to enter the zone below 60th Street.
The plan worked waves of oppositionimmediately A bipartisan group of lawmakers vowing to do everything in their power to kill the plan.
President-elect Donald Trump said so does not support the plan.
