Guardians at Yankees score, live updates: Cleveland looks to avoid 0-2 deficit in ALCS Game 2

The New York Yankees sprinted to a 1-0 lead in the ALCS with a 5-2 Game 1 victory in the Bronx, powered by home runs from Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto and a big performance from Carlos Rodón.

New York will try to gain more control of the series in Game 2 on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, with top player Gerrit Cole on the mound. Cole started twice in the ALDS against the Royals – with the Yankees winning both games – and is going 1-0 in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series this postseason, with a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings with eight strikeouts and two walk freely.

Cleveland will counter with Tanner Bibee. He has logged 8 2/3 innings in two starts in these playoffs – both were the Guardians’ wins over the Tigers in their ALDS – and has struck out nine while walking three. Brayan Rocchio had two of Cleveland’s six hits in Game 1, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, but he will need more help from the middle of the Cleveland lineup. José Ramírez, Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor – Cleveland’s 3-4-5 hitters – combined to go 0-for-11 with a walk and five strikeouts in Game 1.

Live8 updates

  • Josh Naylor recorded the first Guardians hit of the evening with a leadoff single off Gerrit Cole in the second inning. But Cole recorded three quick outs, including a strikeout of Will Brennan, to get out of the inning unscathed. The Yankees have a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning.

  • Guardians limit damage to 1 Yankees who enter first

The Yankees had runners on first and second base and a run on the board before the Guardians recorded their first out of the game. But Tanner Bibee got out of trouble with strikeouts of Austin Wells and Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a nice play in foul territory by right fielder Will Brennan on a fly ball by Giancarlo Stanton to limit the damage to one run.

Yankees lead 1-0 after one inning.

  • A costly mistake gets the Yankees on the board early

The Yankees are on board thanks to a very unfortunate infield error. Gleyber Torres doubled and Juan Soto singled to open the bottom of the first inning with runners on the corners and no outs. Cleveland then appeared to have the first out on an infield pop-up by Aaron Judge.

But short stop Brayan Rocchio misplayed the ball and saw it bounce off his glove onto the turf. The mistake allowed Judge to reach safely and Torres to score from third.

  • Gerrit Cole is off to a strong start. A 1-2-3 inning with a Kyle Manzardo strikeout eliminates the top of the Guardians order.

  • We are just moments away from the first pitch. Gerrit Cole is warming up on the mound for the Yankees.

  • Guardians cut injured P Alex Cobb from postseason roster

It’s not relevant to Game 2, but the Guardians have cut starting pitcher Alex Cobb from their postseason roster due to back problems. He will be replaced by Ben Lively, who posted a 13-10 regular season record with a 3.81 ERA and 1.245 WHIP in 29 starts.

Cobb, 37, was limited to three appearances in the regular season due to injury. He made two postseason starts but lasted just 2 2/3 innings in Monday’s Game 1 loss to the Yankees before leaving the game due to hip tightness and a back spasm. Now his season is over.

  • Gerrit Cole starts for Yankees

Six-time All-Star and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees. Cole posted a 3.41 ERA and 1.126 WHIP with 99 strikeouts in 95 innings of an injury-limited regular season.

Here is New York’s starting lineup for Game 2:

  • Tanner Bibee gets the start for Guardians

Tanner Bibee will start on the mound for Cleveland in Game 2. He posted a 3.47 ERA and 1.117 WHIP with 187 strikeouts in 173 2/3 innings pitched in the regular season.
