A Reynoldsburg man who fatally shot another man in Columbus more than three years ago will spend more than a decade in prison.
Garland Williams, 48, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court to a single count of voluntary manslaughter.
Judge Jeff Brown ordered Williams to serve a prison sentence of 11 to 15 years.
On September 12, 2021 around 5 p.m., Columbus Police received a call about a shooting on the 1200 block of Brookway Road on the city’s east side. Officers arrived to find 24-year-old Guann Gregory suffering from gunshot wounds.
Gregory, also known as GBaby and King Guanndoe, was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries. Williams was identified as the suspect several days later, according to court records.
Ohio law defines voluntary manslaughter as a killing committed “under the influence of sudden passion or in a sudden fit of rage” caused by “serious provocation” of the victim.
Court records show Williams planned to plead self-defense at his trial, which was set to begin Monday.
Gregory is survived by his three children, Avangelene Marie Gregory, Angel Shondelle Gregory and Amiya Adore Gregory; his mother, Guannada Latimer; father, Shawn Gregory; brothers Shawn Gregory, Michael Gregory and Floyd Gregory; sisters Shantae Gregory, Keyaira Gregory, Tiara Gregory and Sariaya Gregory; his grandmother, Belinda Walton; and numerous other family and friends, according to his obituary.
