Gunfire hits Southwest plane on Dallas airport tarmac, officials say

No injuries were reported after a Southwest flight carrying passengers was struck by gunfire on the tarmac of Dallas Love Field on Friday evening, authorities said.

Southwest Airlines Flight 2494 was preparing to depart for Indianapolis when “a bullet apparently struck the right side of the aircraft under the cockpit,” a Southwest spokesperson told CBS News in a statement.

According to the airline, no one was injured. A spokesperson for Dallas Love Field said in an email that the plane returned to the gate after sustaining damage due to a “safety incident” and that the passengers had departed. The runway was also temporarily closed, but has now reopened.

Dallas police confirmed the incident, saying officers responded to reports of gunfire at 9:48 p.m. local time and discovered the plane had been hit.

No further details were provided about the circumstances of the incident or what the possible source of the gunfire was. It is unclear how many people were on board the plane at the time and how much damage the plane sustained.

In its own statement to CBS News, the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was “reportedly struck by gunfire near the cockpit.”

Dallas police are leading the investigation into the incident.

Earlier this week, shots were fired during ongoing gang violence three aircraft hit who landed or left the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The shootings prompted the FAA to issue a 30-day ban on U.S. airlines flying to Haiti.
