HUEHUETOCA, Mexico (AP) — Gunmen opened fire at a bar in central Mexico, killing 10 people and wounding seven, a local official said.
The attack took place on Saturday in the historic city center of Querétaro, in a region that had long been spared from the violence in neighboring states such as Guerrero. However, in recent years, the state of Querétaro has been marked by a handful of violent incidents, raising concerns among authorities.
Juan Luis Ferrusca Ortiz, the city’s public security chief, confirmed the attack and the number of casualties. He said at least one person was arrested after the attack.
He said officials identified those responsible by tracking the license plates of the car in which the armed men fled, which was later abandoned and set on fire.
Two videos from the bar’s security cameras, circulated on social networks, show a group of four walking into the bar and shooting indiscriminately at people eating at different tables. The video shows screaming people throwing themselves to the ground and trying to take refuge, covered in the blood of the people shot.
Hours after the attack, Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri vowed to bring the attackers to justice and said he was working to provide aid to the families of the dead.
“There will be punishment for those responsible for this brutal act,” Kuri wrote on the social media platform X early Sunday.
