On Tuesday night, Minnesota Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson became the latest NHL goalie to score a goal by shooting the puck down the length of the ice.
The Swedish netminder, who shares a line with former Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury, became the first netminder since Tristan Jarry achieved the feat on November 30, 2023 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Gustavsson’s goal makes him the 15th goalie in NHL history to be credited with a goal, but only the 10th to put the puck into the empty net. He joins the list of several former Vezina Trophy winners such as Martin Brodeur, Ron Hextall, Jose Theodore and Linus Ullmark.

Historically, New York Islanders goaltender Billy Smith’s first goal came on November 28, 1979, when Rob Ramage scored through his own net. Meanwhile, Hextall became the first netminder to fire a puck the length of the ice, achieving the milestone goal on December 8, 1987.
The St. Louis Blues became the latest team to surrender a goaltender, joining several Original Six franchises including the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens.
Last season, two Penguins goalies scored a goal, with Alex Nedeljkovic scoring his third career AHL goal with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins about a week and a half before Jarry reached his goal in the NHL.
