HADDONFIELD, N.J. (CBS) — A Haddonfield resident and his pet were found unresponsive by firefighters Monday morning as a fire raged through their home.

Haddonfield Police and Haddonfield Fire Station #1 responded to a home at 400 Walnut Street around 7 a.m. after smoke was seen coming from the roof of the home.

Emergency medical services found the home’s sole occupant unconscious near the front door and began performing life-saving measures. The occupant was later pronounced dead, a Haddonfield City spokesperson said in a news release Monday afternoon.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and searched the home again for other occupants. According to the city of Haddonfield, the resident’s cat was also found dead in the home.

Two Haddonfield police officers and members of the emergency medical service were treated for minor smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported, the news release said.
