Harvest Homecoming Festival in New Albany cancels events on Sunday after deadly shooting

Events for the 2024 Harvest Homecoming Festival in New Albany, Indiana, were canceled Sunday after a shooting Saturday near the festival site that left one man dead and two other people injured.

“This decision was made out of respect for those affected by last night’s tragedy and for the overall well-being of our patrons, vendors and volunteers,” festival officials said in a statement on Facebook. “Thank you to our customers, vendors, volunteers, city officials and our community for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.”

In a statement posted Saturday, New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said officers were called to the area of ​​State Street and Black Street around 9:53 p.m. after shots were heard near the YMCA building in the area. Officers assigned to the festival also responded.

When officers arrived, they found three people with gunshot wounds. One of them, an unidentified man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two people found were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

As of Sunday morning, police are still looking for a person of interest in connection with the shooting, described as a black man with dreadlocks wearing a red hoodie. He is considered armed and dangerous.
