Darlene Hensley’s two donkeys, Zeb and Ellie, became emotional support animals for the community.

According to a previous report from News Center 7, Zeb and Ellie were attacked by dogs in their kennel on December 12.

Zeb was taken to an Ohio State University veterinary hospital where he continues to recover.

“We all know that Zeb is an exceptional fighter with a big heart and a huge mind. After all, he fought two pit bulls for almost an hour while in extreme pain and shock from massive injuries. He doesn’t give up,” Hensley said.

Ellie recovers in the same stable as Zeb and does not take off his bandages.

According to Hensley, Zeb will soon undergo oral surgery.

But he will face another battle in the next 72 hours.

One of the deep wounds in an infected joint has begun to heal, but veterinarians are watching for a possible infection.

“If there are living bacteria in that joint that is now surrounded by healing tissue and those bacteria start to reproduce again, a dangerous infection will occur. This will be a very disastrous complication,” Hensley said.

If this does not happen, Zeb will soon leave the ICU and go home.

“Our hats are off to the excellent care Zeb receives from the staff at OSU,” Hensley said.

A GoFundMe set up to help pay medical bills and a new stall for Zeb has surpassed $69,000.

News Center 7 will continue to follow this story.
