A Jackson County family court judge has set dates to determine whether two teenage boys accused of murdering popular Irish chef Shaun Brady will be tried as adults.
Brady, 44, was fatally shot during a confrontation with a group while he was taking out trash in the parking lot behind Brady & Fox, the Irish restaurant he co-owned in Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood.
The shooting was witnessed by several people and captured on video by nearby security cameras. Both teens were arrested within an hour of his death.
One of the minors, identified in court documents as KH, was charged on August 29 with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and attempted theft of a motor vehicle.
The second teen, identified in court documents as LM, was charged the following evening with second-degree murder and attempted robbery, both felonies.
According to Jackson County District Court spokesman Scott Lauck, KH and LM’s status hearings were scheduled for Dec. 4 and Dec. 18.
Before the shooting, LM was in the 10th grade, Lauck said, though it has not been made public where. Attorneys for LM have said that while LM was a passenger in the allegedly stolen vehicle linked to Brady’s death, he is not the one accused of actually shooting Brady.
Both teens have been held in a Jackson County juvenile detention center since the night of the fatal shooting.
Brady is survived by his wife, Kate, a native of Wichita, and their two young children. His death has caused widespread grief and outrage, particularly in Kansas City’s Irish community and Brookside’s business community.
After Brady’s death, a memorial fund was established, which raised more than $184,000 for a foundation to support his family.
