Hearing postponed for man suspected of killing 7-week-old baby

The case against the man accused of killing his infant daughter was postponed for 10 days in Kern County Superior Court on Tuesday in hopes of setting a trial date at the next hearing.

Gregory Higgins, 37, is charged with murder and assault of a child under the age of 8, resulting in death in the death of his 7-week-old daughter, who had Down syndrome.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Higgins’ attorney, David Torres, requested that the status conference be rescheduled and said he hopes to be able to choose a trial date at the next hearing. The delay comes Tuesday after Torres said in court on May 28 that he and accuser Stephanie Taconi may be able to reach a settlement.

On September 15, 2021, Bakersfield police officers arrived at Higgins’ home after reports that an infant was not breathing, according to the BPD report. According to the report, Higgins was working from home and noticed the baby fussing and tried to comfort her.

Higgins noticed the child was having trouble breathing and attempted CPR on the living room floor, according to the police report. After the baby was taken to Memorial Hospital, a CT scan showed the child had three skull fractures and a brain hemorrhage, according to the report.

According to the report, Higgins is the father of two other children who were with their mother on the day the baby died.

Higgins’ next court appearance is June 21. He remains in custody on $2 million bail.
