In total, about a thousand police officers were deployed in and around Berlin’s government district on Thursday, a spokeswoman said, to monitor the state ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the German constitution.

Police were also on the River Spree with patrol boats and had deployed a helicopter.

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and special task groups (SEK) of the State Criminal Investigation Department of Berlin and Lower Saxony were also involved.

According to the police, the situation was calm and relaxed this morning.

A total of 1,100 guests were expected on the square in front of the Chancellery. Among them were Chancellor Olaf Scholz, most ministers, many state premiers and representatives of the Bundestag and other institutions. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will deliver the keynote address.

The Basic Law came into effect on May 23, 1949, also the date of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany.
