EDINA, Minn. – Hennepin County officials say there is no evidence of tampering after a photo was posted on social media showing an open, unattended vehicle full of ballots.
The photo was taken outside Edina City Hall on Friday and shared by the Minnesota Senate District 50 GOP on X.
“Do these ballots look safe,” said the tweet, which racked up more than 1,000 likes.
A Hennepin County spokesperson said Saturday that the county and the carrier have taken corrective action to prevent a recurrence, and the driver has been fired.
“Election security is of the utmost importance, and leaving ballots unattended is simply unacceptable,” said Hennepin County Auditor Daniel Rogan. “Hennepin County is strengthening its transfer protocols with county personnel and suppliers. An incident like this underscores the value of strong supply chain management processes so that risks can be addressed and integrity verified.”
Hennepin County reports all expected ballots have been processed and no evidence of tampering with sealed transfer cases has been found. Individual ballots were also inspected and staff determined that all were received in a sealed condition. Both inspections are routine election integrity processes.
According to the city, the vehicle contained ballots that had been collected from other cities before coming to Edina.
Additionally, Edina released surveillance footage from the parking lot at the time, which showed that the ballots in the vehicle had not been tampered with.
