(CBS DETROIT) – From changes to Michigan’s minimum wage, cage-free egg requirements, and improvements in cardiac arrest preparedness, it’s all on the agenda in 2025.
In April, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed two House bills that would require comprehensive cardiac emergency plans for schools, athletic facilities and school events.
“That means they are surrounded by adults and other children who know how to perform CPR, who know there is an AED, where it is and that it is accessible,” said Cindie DeWolf, senior mission progress advisor at the American Heart Association.
These laws will come into effect at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year.
DeWolf said that with the implementation of this new law, Michigan will be a leader in the nation in quickly responding to cardiac events.
“Minutes mean everything in sudden cardiac arrest,” DeWolf said.
Another change for Michigan is automatic voter registration for residents who get their driver’s license. It starts at the end of June 2025. Anyone who is entitled to vote and applies for a permit or identity card will be automatically registered.
Another big change the minimum wage will be.
“It’s a huge change. We will immediately see a 50% increase in the tipped minimum wage,” said John Sellek, a spokesperson for Save MI Tips.
Michigan’s minimum wage will rise again to $12.48 in January and February. The change has set off a fight in the Legislature to slow the increases.
Additionally, the eggs you purchase must be cage-free as of December 31, 2024, as a ban on the sale and production of caged eggs goes into effect in Michigan.
