Alfie Hewett failed to complete a ‘Golden Slam’ in singles and failed to win a gold medal, losing a thrilling Paralympic final in men’s wheelchair tennis.

The 26-year-old was defeated 6-2 4-6 7-5 by Japan’s Tokito Oda at Roland Garros.

A drop shot from Hewett just missed Oda’s serve on match point at 5-3 in the final set, after which the Briton was unable to serve out the victory.

The Paralympic gold medal in singles is the only major title in the sport that Hewett has not yet won.

The 18-year-old Oda secured victory on his own second match point and celebrated his victory by leaning back on the clay, wrenching the wheels off his chair.

Hewett then walked to the other side of the net and grabbed a wheel for Oda to reattach.

The two embraced warmly as the packed crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier gave both players a long and loud applause after an excellent match.
