High school student on bicycle injured in crash near campus in Sacramento County

A high school student on a bicycle was struck by a vehicle and injured in a reported collision near campus in Sacramento County Thursday morning.

According to Principal Chase Tafoya, the collision occurred at a crosswalk near Albert Einstein Middle School. The school is located on Mirandy Drive, just north of Kiefer Boulevard in Rosemont.

In a letter to parents, Tafoya said one of the Albert Einstein Middle School students was riding a bicycle and was struck by a vehicle. She said the student was trying to cross the street at a crosswalk near the school.

The principal said the driver of the vehicle did not stop after the student was struck. Law enforcement investigated the collision “as a hit-and-run,” Tafoya said, and she urged students who witnessed the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol.

A spokesperson for the CHP East Sacramento Area Office did not immediately respond to questions from The Sacramento Bee on Thursday.

The principal said first aid was administered to the student and medics arrived to take the student to a hospital. Tafoya said school officials have contacted the student’s family and are awaiting further updates on the student’s condition.

“We will investigate how this incident happened to see if there are steps we can take to make our routes to school safer,” Tafoya said in the letter to parents, “but more importantly, we are focused on providing support to the student. and their families.”

She said the collision should be a reminder to everyone, especially students and drivers, to be more mindful of safety in and near area school zones. The principal said drivers should always exercise extreme caution and drive more slowly, even when students are not visible.
