A section of a hiking trail in Montana’s Glacier National Park was closed Thursday after a hiker was injured by a bear, park officials said.
The hiker, a 35-year-old man, is not in life-threatening condition, according to the National Park Service.
The hiker was injured Thursday morning after he and his group encountered a bear near the trailhead of the Grinnell Glacier Overlook trail, the park service said.
The Highline Trail from Haystack Butte to Granite Park Chalet is closed until further notice due to the incident, the agency said.
The type of bear is unknown and under investigation, the report said. Both black and grizzly bears call the national park home.
“Hikers are strongly encouraged to hike in groups, make noise while hiking, and have bear spray available and know how to use it,” the park service said in a statement.
The injured hiker was able to get to safety and was taken by ambulance to Whitefish, a town west of the park.
Glacier National Park covers 1,583 square miles in northwestern Montana. It was the 10th most visited national park last year, according to data from the park service, which also manages other types of properties, including the Lincoln Memorial.
