Hiker’s Missing Brother Urges Greater US Involvement in Search Efforts: ‘I Just Want to Find My Brother’

The brother of an American tourist who disappeared while walking on the Greek island of Amorgos is making an urgent appeal for help.

Albert Calibet, 59, a retired police officer who holds American-French citizenship, was Still missing on Tuesday after embarking on a solo hike a week earlier. His brother, Oliver, was in Greece with a small group of friends and family to help with the search, and posted a video on YouTube on Monday pleading for more help in finding Calibet.

But Oliver Calibet said he believes the U.S. government should do more to find his brother.

“This is a first responder, this is a missing man. This is a man who has helped many people throughout his career,” Oliver Calibet said in a YouTube video.

Friends and family of Albert Calibet told CBS News that he had been familiar with the island’s hiking trails for years.

“It doesn’t make sense. It’s like it swallowed him up,” said Sandrine Cutright, Calibet’s sister-in-law.

Robin Winston, a friend of Calibet, said Calibet may have suffered an injury that has left him unable to move, and stressed the urgency of finding him.

Greece has faced a severe heat wave, with temperatures exceeding 104 degrees earlier this month, adding to the dangers hikers face. The heat waves were so intense that authorities had to close schools.

Calibet is one of many tourists who have recently gone missing on the Greek islands. At least three people have been found dead, including prominent British TV doctor Michael Mosley and a 55-year-old Toby Bladen from Floral Park, New York. Another body was discovered on Saturday on the island of Samos, where a Dutch hiker had been missing for a week.

According to Reuters, two French women were also reported missing. One of the women contacted the owner of the guest house where she was staying on Friday to ask for help. Ilias Gavanas, the owner, told Reuters that she had sent him a selfie and a message early on Friday morning indicating that she had fallen.

Although Calibet has not been seen for seven days, his family remains determined.

“I know, probably the chances are very slim,” said Oliver Calibet. “But if there’s that one percent… I just want to find my brother.”
