Hit-and-run driver flees Kansas City crash with injured motorcyclist still on hood and windshield

A driver who drove off after a collision collided with a minibike at high speed on Friday morning and fled with the motorcyclist still on the hood and windshield of the car, a police spokesperson said.

The crash happened around 1:10 a.m. when the motorcyclist on a red Honda Z motorcycle, commonly known as a Monkey Bike, was stopped at a red light at West 35th Street and Southwest Trafficway in the Roanoke and Valentine neighborhoods of Kansas City, said Kansas City Police Capt. Jake Becchina.

The driver of a silver Honda Civic was traveling south on Southwest Trafficway at a high rate of speed and collided with the motorcycle, Becchina said. The motorcyclist was thrown from the minibike and landed on the hood and windshield of the car.

The driver of the Civic reportedly continued south with the motorcyclist still on top of the car after dragging the minibike for several yards until it broke free, Becchina said. At about 36th Street, the driver reportedly slammed on the brakes, throwing the motorcyclist onto the street.

Becchina said the driver reportedly tried to back up and drive away, but damage from the crash made the car inoperable. The driver then ran from the vehicle, heading east on 36th Street and north on Jefferson Street.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police were looking for the driver of the Honda Civic, who was believed to be under the influence, Becchina said.
