The Horton Fire northeast of Payson burned more than 600 acres of forest Saturday and was 0% contained, according to Tonto National Forest officials.
Nearly 150 firefighters and personnel battled the wildfire that threatened nearby communities of Tonto Creek Estates, Tonto Christian Camp, Tonto Fish Hatcher and Zane Gray Cabins, which were on “set” status before the evacuation and must be prepared to leave in advance. authorities.
The fire started on December 14 and caused an emergency closure of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and Tonto National Forest earlier this week.
According to authorities, the forest closures would remain in effect until January 31, 2025.
“The public is asked to avoid the fire area. The purpose of the closure order is to protect public health and safety during the Horton Fire, and to protect assigned fire personnel involved in wildfire suppression operations,” according to a statement from Tonto National Forest.
The fire was under investigation but was believed to be human-caused, burning acres of ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forest.
According to authorities, smoke from the fire will be visible in the area in the coming days.
“The smoke will be heavier in the morning as it settles in lower elevations and will clear as temperatures rise,” the statement said.
Authorities have recommended that people with breathing or heart problems take precautions and avoid the area.
