On Tuesday, the high temperature in Philadelphia is expected to reach 94 degrees, but on the Jersey Shore it will only be 78 degrees.

How to cool down during a heat wave

If you have a chance to get out of town and go to the Jersey Shore, Delaware beaches or anywhere else along the ocean, now is a good time to do so. On the coast it is noticeably cooler and partly cloudy.

If you do go to the beach, listen to the lifeguards and make sure you don’t trade the dangers of excessive heat for the dangers of the ocean.

You can immerse yourself in cold water without leaving the shore by taking a cool or lukewarm shower or bath, or simply soaking your feet in a bathtub. According to the University of Reading (in Britain, not Pennsylvania) and a study of researchers at Temple University Hospital, a lukewarm bath or shower will cool you down faster and prevent chills. But if you want to slap a cold washcloth on your neck, we won’t stop you.

You may also want to avoid sugar and heavy meals. Digestion creates heat, making it more difficult for the body to cool down. Although we sometimes call spicy food “hot,” doctors say spicy food can actually cool you down because it can cause sweating, the body’s natural cooling process.

It is also best to avoid using your stove and oven if possible, as this will heat your home even more.

In a pinch, you can grab an ice cube and hold it on your wrist, ankle, neck, or temple to get a rejuvenating, cool feeling.
