How Kittle hilariously confused Purdy when 49ers QB was a rookie

How Kittle Hilariously Confused Purdy When 49ers QB Was A Rookie originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Brock Purdy can’t catch a break.

The 24-year-old quarterback threw a subpar first pitch during a recent San Francisco Giants game, butchered the essential Bay Area lingo and now the story of his hazing with the 49ers has resurfaced.

San Francisco tight end George Kittle hilariously explained how he playfully introduced a then-rookie Purdy to the 49ers while appearing on Tuesday’s edition of the “Dan Patrick Show.”

“I did [haze Purdy] on the first day, yeah,” Kittle told Patrick. “I put an Iowa football jersey in his locker, it was his first day. He pulled it out, turned around, looked straight at me and asked, “What is this doing in my locker?” I say, ‘Dude, I have no idea, man. The [equipment] The guys here are crazy.”

Kittle, a proud Iowa alum, enjoyed trolling Purdy, who attended Iowa State — bitter rivals.

The 30-year-old also made it clear that he blames equipment managers for his non-serious shenanigans, assuring no jobs are at risk.

“Just for that kind of thing,” Kittle said. “That was pretty clear to me.”

Kittle, a seven-year NFL veteran, enjoys getting to know his new teammates through jokes and fun tests.

He knows that hazing isn’t what it used to be – or what it used to be – but makes sure the newest 49ers quickly know who No. 85 is on the field and in the locker room.

Purdy was unknowingly next in line.

“I mean, I wasn’t there [old-school hazing]Kittle said to Patrick. “I’ve heard some stories. But no. Absolutely not. Most of all I love it, I just love having a conversation with that guy, just seeing what, small talk, if I can say that. How are you going to respond to me? Are you going to get nervous? Is that how our relationship will go? Or can you throw some zingers back at me? I enjoy that.”

The young quarterback received Kittle’s banter well, and the two have since had more fun trash talk inspired by their rival collegiate ties. Purdy’s Iowa State coaches even suggested he not throw the ball to the Iowa product — a bit too extreme.

While Kittle and Purdy are key partners in San Francisco’s passing game, the two are just as close down the field.

“That’s one of the reasons I love Brock so much, because he would just throw zingers at me,” Kittle said. “I thought, ‘We’re going to be good friends.’ ”

The two will surely represent their respective college teams for a long time to come.
