MINNEAPOLIS – Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of downtown Minneapolis on Sunday to unite against Israel’s war in Gaza a day earlier Israel marks one year since the October 7 Hamas attacks.
“I thought last year would be a trend of people not caring about the situation anymore, and that’s not true,” said Maysoon Wazwaz of American Muslims for Palestine.
Meredith Aby of the Anti-War Committee says she is concerned about the US sending weapons to Israel in a conflict that has now left tens of thousands dead in Gaza, according to the Health Ministry.
“I do know that the places I visited in Gaza have been destroyed,” Aby said.
In August, the State Department announced U.S. approval $20 billion in weapons, fighter jets and missiles for Israel in the coming years.
“We really feel that Israel would not be able to get away with this genocide if the United States, and in particular the Biden administration, did not send all these weapons,” Aby said.
Here at home, Aby says people in Minneapolis are worried about their relatives in the Middle East a conflict that has now spread to Lebanon.
“They are very concerned about whether or not their grandmother, their brother, their sister, their aunt and their uncle will be alive tomorrow,” Aby said.
Aby says they will not rest until the US completely divests itself of Israel.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara made the announcement on Saturday Additional patrols will be deployed at the city’s synagogues ahead of the Jewish holy days and the commemoration of the October 7 attacks in the wake of terrorist threats against Temple Israel.
