Hurricane Helene is already causing chaos in the sports world this weekend, and Major League Soccer is no exception.
The hurricane formed in the Caribbean on Tuesday and is expected to approach Florida and the Gulf Coast late Thursday night. Beginning Wednesday afternoon, the hurricane is expected to move through the Florida Panhandle and reach Alabama and Georgia by Friday morning, before stalling over Tennessee and Kentucky near St. Louis on Saturday as a Category 4 hurricane, which could produce “catastrophic” storm surge.
There are and this weekend, and because of the storm. There are also two MLS games that are in the path of the storm this weekend that could be affected.
Inter Miami vs Charlotte FC
Date: Saturday, September 28 | 7:30pm ET
Location: Chase Stadium | Fort Lauderdale, Florida
As the hurricane makes its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast, Fort Lauderdale and the Miami area will continue to experience much of the storm’s impact over the next few days, which could very easily impact Miami’s game against Charlotte scheduled for Saturday night.
Florida has declared a state of emergency in 61 counties in preparation for the storm. While that region of South Florida is the only part of the state that is not experiencing much storm surge, Fort Lauderdale is set to receive a significant amount of rain that could cause travel disruptions and result in the postponement of the game.
St. Louis City SC vs. Sporting KC
Date: Saturday, September 28 | 8:30pm ET
Location: CITYPARK | St. Louis, Missouri
While the hurricane will be gone by then, forecasts for Wednesday call for the storm to end around the St. Louis area by Saturday morning. By then, the region is likely to see only rain and at most a few storms. That may not result in the St. Louis-Kansas City game being postponed, but it could mean the game will have to be played in the rain.
