Hurricane warnings in northern Georgia counties as Helene makes landfall

Hurricane Helene has made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend. The storm will move through Georgia overnight and Friday morning.

Heavy weather team 2 has been following Helene and her path to Georgia for days.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says damaging winds, significant flooding and brief tornadoes will accompany Helene as it moves through our area.

The National Weather Service has identified a rare high flood risk for most of Georgia.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Butts, Jasper, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties.

A possible tornado in South Georgia has left two people dead as Hurricane Helene approaches. They were in a mobile home, Wheeler County Sheriff Randy Rigdon said.

A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Barrow, Butts, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Lamar, Pike, Rockdale, Spalding, Upson and Walton counties until 3:15 a.m. Friday.

Frog Road near Luella Road in Locust Grove is flooded and barricades have been set up.

Hurricane Helene has been upgraded to a dangerous Category 4 storm.

The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to take shelter from Helene.

“Make sure you have food, water, medicine, a flashlight, candles and other supplies. Once you have what you need, unless it is an emergency to leave your home, shelter in place. Flooding on the streets can be life-threatening, so report any flooding on the street and never drive through water on the road.”

Hurricane warnings have been extended north to include Butts, Jasper, Pike and Spalding counties. Lamar and Upson counties were previously the only Channel 2 Action News counties under a hurricane warning.

Due to Hurricane Helene, Amtrak has made service adjustments. The Amtrak Crescent, which runs daily between New York and New Orleans, including a stop in Atlanta, will not operate today and Friday.
