Ready to travel during the holidays? You may find yourself in even more traffic than expected in Delaware.
Several major roadways were closed early Wednesday morning after a dump truck with its bed up on southbound Interstate 95 struck the northbound Route 141 bridge, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation.
As of 8 a.m., southbound I-95 was closed at Route 141. I-295 at Route 141 was also closed due to the crash, DelDOT said.
How long will I-95 be closed?
DelDOT announced that it was an indefinite closure and that there were already major traffic problems as a result.
As of 8:30 a.m., Route 141 reopened over I-95.
Thanksgiving Travels: Like the national AAA Thanksgiving forecast, Delaware will likely see record travel
AAA predicts record numbers of Thanksgiving trips
The crash comes as more Delawareans than ever plan to travel for Thanksgiving this week, according to recently released AAA forecasts.
Delaware’s estimates follow AAA’s national forecasts, which indicate there will be record-breaking travelers this year — nearly 80 million, to be more precise.
While AAA estimates that only 217,000 First State residents will travel for Thanksgiving, that’s still nearly a quarter of the state’s population.
Of those, more than 91% of travelers, or more than 198,000 Delaware residents, will drive. That is 1.8% more drivers than last year.
