Illinois unemployment claims fell last week

The number of jobless claims in Illinois fell last week compared to the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

The number of new applications for unemployment benefits, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 7,327 in the week ended Sept. 7, from 8,092 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. jobless claims rose to 230,000 last week, up 2,000 claims from the 228,000 claims the week before, after seasonal adjustment.

Nebraska saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing by 104.0%. Meanwhile, the Virgin Islands saw the largest percentage decrease in new claims, with claims dropping by 50%.
