Immersive light show helps Parisian church history ‘come alive’

PARIS, France (KMID/KPEJ) – A new spectacle is drawing large crowds to Saint-Sulpice Church on the French capital’s Left Bank.

The neoclassical monument, with an interior larger than the famous Notre Dame Cathedral, is now the centerpiece of an immersive light show. At night, the walls come alive with 360-degree video projections as actors tell the story of the church and its place in French history.

The show ‘Paris Cœur de Lumières’ combines historical episodes and fictional characters to reimagine the Saint-Germain district during the Fronde, the 17th century Civil War and the lead-up to the French Revolution.

The church’s expansive interior, spanning 6,000 feet, or approximately 64,583 square feet, will be transferred to a digital stage via advanced video mapping. Director and composer Damien Fontaine explained that more than 45 projectors illuminate parts of the church.

“It’s the combination and addition of these 45 small pieces of footage, like a mosaic of images, that form one big picture,” he added.

The production, which runs until November 23, underlines a growing trend in Paris to use lighting technology to showcase legendary church interiors. A similar event took place at the Saint-Eustache Church until September, with video projections, lighting effects and a spatial electronic soundtrack.
