(Bloomberg) — Indian authorities have so far seized 88.9 billion rupees ($1.1 billion) in illicit cash, drugs and other goods in their crackdown on illegal voting inducements during India’s six-week elections. the country’s election commission said on Saturday.

The loot exceeds all seized during the last general election of 2019, and comes as authorities have vowed to crack down on money and goods used to bribe voters in the world’s biggest elections .
The commission said the drug seizures reflected 45% of the value of all seizures to date. Liquor, cash, precious metals and other free gifts were also seized, the commission said.
The elections in India started on April 19 and will run until June 1. The winner will be announced on June 4. India’s Code of Conduct for Elections prohibits bribery or intimidation of voters.
